India’s upper house approves the Patent Bill – domestic companies jubilant and internationals dismayed

India’s 250 member upper House Rajyasabha passed the controversial Patent Bill with major amendments prohibiting the copying of patented drugs, despite criticism that the legislation would prohibit the manufacture of some low-cost generic drugs.

According to sources, the bill lost most of its advantages for the international drug companies as the Government has to accept all of the amendments proposed by the Communists in India popularly known as Left Parties.
Many believe now that the bill will allow India to anchor in World Trade Organization without a lot of advantages of the Indian companies lost to the Multinationals.
