China may not get access to European Arms
Preetam Khanna
Mar. 23, 2005

China may not get access to the long awaited European Arms. EU plans to lift its 15-year-old arms embargo on China have been set back by Chinese legislation authorizing the use of military force against Taiwan to counter any declaration of independence by Taiwan, an EU spokeswoman said on March 22.

French President Jacques Chirac had convinced German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and British Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2004 to lift the embargo, but U.S. President George W. Bush and the U.S. House of Representatives have urged the EU to maintain its arms restrictions.
