Putin continues to play the world politics of oil – America provides Russia the space to flex its muscle
Recent short and unofficial summit between President Push and President Putin ended in somewhat complex outcome. But as time goes by, the two powers of east and west are showing their understanding of each other. America has decided to provide the Russians the necessary space to flex their muscles around them.
The whole episode started with Ukrain. After all the hoopla on the election and reelction in Ukraine, Russia and Ukraine have closer to each other based on blessings of America, NATO and EU as well as economic necessity of each other.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is in Ukraine for talks with his counterpart Viktor Yushchenko, said on 19th march that Western gas companies should join the Gas Transport Consortium, a group that facilitates the shipment of natural gas from Russia to Europe by way of Ukraine. Putin said Germany was "the most natural partner" to hook up with the consortium, but he would also seek cooperation from Italy's ENI and French gas major Gaz de France.
Slowly Ukraine have realized that she cannot survive without Russia in the short and long term. But what really facilitated the whole process that President Bush realized that Russians just need a little space to maneuver in their sphere of influence. America is slowly and silently providing that space.
