Bush’s Iraq fiasco responsible for Chinese and Russian veto on Zimbabwe – wrong veto to defy Bush legacy
Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution Friday that would have imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe's longtime president, Robert Mugabe, and 13 senior members of his government.
According to the international think tanks, China and Russia coordinated their vetos to send a chiilling message to Bush Admnistrtaion that America cannot use Security Council to do what it did in case of Iraq.
No one denies that Bush did lie to the world and made his surrogates lie on weapons of mass destruction. But what is sad is the vetos from Russia and China set a bad example allowing Mugabe continue his mockery of democracy.
Some say, if Bush allowed Musharraf to continue to hold democracy a hostage, allowsed occupied Iraq to create a so called baseless democratic government that is nothing but a model mass corruption, what’s wrong allowing Mugabe a few carrots before the sticks?
According to a draft of the resolution, the measure would have instituted a travel ban on Mugabe and others in his government, frozen many of their assets and imposed an international arms embargo on the regime.
The measure received nine votes -- the minimum for it to pass. However, two of the five negative votes were from Russia and China, who as permanent members of the Security Council have veto power.
