Iraqi Army will have increasing influence on the Iraqi Government in the several years – what does that mean to Iraq and Iran?

A car bomb ripped through a busy commercial street in a Shia area of Baghdad, killing at least 51 people Tuesday and wounding scores more in the deadliest blast in the capital in more than three months. But Iraqi Army moved in fast to secure the area. The efficiency level of the Iraqi military has improved remarkably in the last one year. But with that has grown the ambition of these men who formerly belonged to different militia but now work for a federal army.

The geopolitics of Iraq and the history tells that Iraqi military is on the rise again. The top ranking military officers are demanding better pay, better respect and above all say in Government’s decisions. The current Iraqi Government is aware of that but not that concerned knowing very well American forces act as counter weight to any Iraqi Army ambitions.

But on the long term the situation is somewhat different. The ambition of Iraqi Army will not stop just at participation in the government. They will ask for power. The American military will leave i9n the next several years. A military takeover of Iraq after that is imminent. The biggest question is will that be a Sunni or Shia takeover of Iraq? Iran may be plotting it for a long time. It gives them an advantage over oil and allows them to threat Sunni strongholds like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Iran has tried to infiltrate the Iraqi military since 2003 when Bush Administration disbanded the Sunni military of Iraq.
