Fraud in Broadband services in India: Government to take action
In India the Broadband corruption is rampant. Private providers are adverting and selling services to the consumers with download speed less than 256 Kbps and calling them as broadband services. The corruption starts from putting the ads, then convincing the customer and finally providing lower quality and speed services while charging premium prices.
The government on Thursday issued a strict warning to telecom operators who claim to be providing broadband connectivity at speeds of below 256 kbps, saying such services do not come under the earmarked category.
"Any download speed that is at 256 kbps or more can alone be termed as broadband services," the communications and Information Technology Ministry said in a statement here.
"Therefore, telecom operators should not mislead the consumers by making such advertisements or adopt marketing tactics that would defeat the very purpose of providing broadband services," the ministry added.
The department of telecommunications, in a communication to all telecom service providers, said branding or naming services with less than 256 kbps of download speed is not in accordance with the broadband policy of October 2004.
The policy defines broadband connectivity as "always-on-minimum" downloads speed of 256 kbps.
Operators who claim in advertisements to be providing broadband at 64 kbps and 128 kbps have been asked to refrain from such activities.
