The monarchy in Nepal is abolished. The King is just an a normal citizen of Nepal. The country has served an eviction notice on him. He has to vacate the Royal Palace within a few days. But he is a shrewd business man. He plans to settle abroad with hundreds of millions of dollars to take care of him and generations to come. The current controversy is about his crown. It is worth millions because of exquisite diamonds and precious stones on the crown.
Nepal’s prominent scholars believe Gyanendra is a businessman and knows how much the crown is worth.
He does not want to hand it over soon. Nepal may lose the real diamonds and other gems that are in the crown because the ex-king is busy finding imitation jewels to replace the real ones in the crown before formal hand over to the Maoists.
The ex-king Mr. Gyanendra Shah is also hiding hundreds of millions of dollars and refuses to allow audit of Royal assets.
According to some in Nepal, he wants the military to revolt but the Nepalese military has refused to obey his command. He may try to steal Nepal’s assets and flee to Switzerland. But the Maoists are watching his every move.
A confrontation may end up in ex-king arrest and imprisonment. But the common people of Nepal may not tolerate a direct humiliation of their ex-King. The final comprise may be to let him exile with a few million dollars.
