Maoists in Nepal start compromising with other parties – will Nepalese Military stage a Coup d''etat?
Kiran Chaube
Jun. 8, 2008

The trouble in Nepal may not have ended. Maoists on Sunday agreed to amend the Constitution allowing a government to be formed or dissolved through a simple majority in Constituent Assembly. They have already given up the position of the President.

The former King of Nepal has plenty of influence on Nepalese people and the Military. Other parties believe little in these Maoists. While many in Nepal wanted a radical change, that perception is changing very fast.

Nepalese Military is not very comfortable with the Maoists. General Rukmangad Katwal of the Nepalese Army holds the key. The realationship between the Nepalese military and the maoists is very poor.

Maoists are trying to infiltrate and change the Nepalese military top to bottom. But the Army is resisting the same.

The key is also how India reacts. There are signs that certain sections of Bepalese Military is looking towards india to provide security to the Hindu nation. They belive, like in UK, the monarch should be reinstated with symbolic power.

The maoists leader Parchanda faces a daunting task. Any downturn in Nepalese economy will turn people against them. The Military is also waiting for people to get dissolusioned with the Maoists.
