One in every 800 people are diagnosed with terminal cancer per year in India – the staggering number rising exponentially
Pradeep Sinha
Jun. 2, 2008

India is facing a cancer related problem. Close to one in every eight hundred people are diagnosed with advanced terminal cancer in India. The number of cancer incidence is rising very rapidly because poor health management, environmental pollution and contaminated food products. Lung cancer is one the biggest problem from smoking habits of males and females.

A lack of awareness on detection and treatment of cancer among the patients in India is a big problem. Most cancer patients never get treated at an early stage.

Take the example of colon cancer. It takes one mutated cell to cause all the troubles. The cell gets doubled 30 times over 12 years to get to a size where the malignant tissue/tumor can be of 1 gm size. That is the size which can be detected by current medical technologies. If patients come for treatment at this stage, they are most like saved.

However, three more doublings of the cell over a few months makes the tissue reach metastasis. At this stage, the cancer tissue starts breaking off from the tumor and dissipates into other parts of the body through the blood supply.

Most patients in India come to the doctor at this stage. They are at the point of no hope. Very little can be done at this stage.

According international cancer watchdogs, close to 28% of the cancer incidences are lung related and caused by tobacco. India tobacco is raw and mostly unfiltered especially in the countryside.
