India signals Iran signs of caution on Iran-India pipeline deal as Indian Petroleum Ministry starts bargaining Gas price with Iran
India stands firm on the surface on Ian Gas pipeline deal but behind the scene things look different.
Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in New Delhi on March 16 that India should refrain from signing an oil pipeline deal with Iran. Her Indian counterpart, Foreign Minister Natwar Singh, appeared to reject the idea at a joint press conference with Rice, saying, "We have no problems of any kind with Iran."
But according sources close to the Government of India, India is trying to tell Iran to comply with US demands and requirements of no nuclear enrichment issues in order for Gas Pipeline deal to move forward.
India showed the first sign of backing out from the Gas deal. India threatened on March 16th to pull out of the joint Iranian-Indian pipeline project unless Iran agreed to sell gas at a low enough price for Indian consumers. Indian Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said India's price is lower than other countries'' prices and if Tehran had other markets willing to pay higher prices then it should "tap them."
According to international think tanks, this is just a way of getting out of the deal without showing the world that India is following US demands.
