China and Russia hint at jointly counterbalancing US missile plan

China and Russia have criticised Washington’s missile shield plans together. The wording is strong and the statement came during a visit by the new Russian President Mr Medvedev that had already been seen as a signal to the west that Russia had other partners it could work with. According to the joint statement, ‘Both sides believe that creating a global missile defence system, including deploying such systems in certain regions of the world, or plans for such co-operation, do not help support strategic balance and stability, and harm international efforts to control arms and the non-proliferation process’.

Chinese President assured Medvedev that China is with Russia in countering the NATO challenges in Asia and Europe.

According to Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing, the fact that Russian President Mr Medvedev traveled to China before any other major country, sets the tone for the level of cooperation and stragegic relattionship between Russia and China.
