It was another success story of Indian engineers performing at their best. According to the country's defense ministry. "India successfully test-fired Wednesday a nuclear-capable missile that can hit targets from Beijing to Baghdad."

The Agni III, a solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile, was launched from Wheeler Island off the eastern state of Orissa, and is capable of carrying up to a 300-kiloton nuclear warhead. The surface-to-surface projectile reached its designated target in 13 minutes and 20 seconds ''traveling through a peak height of 350 kilometers with a velocity of more than 4,000 meters per second.

India is accelerating its arms race with China with disclosure of China's nuclear-submarine base on the Hainan Island in South China Sea. It has come as a wake-up call to defense experts in India, which doesn''t have nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear-tipped missiles.

India is diverting major resources to compete with China in nuclear arsenal and delivery systems.
