Tata Group's retail venture Trent transforming Indian retail sector to American style – can India follow American model?
Anil Rane
May 8, 2008

It may be ridiculous to even think that you can take an American model of doing business and implant in the middle of Indian ethos. But that is exactly what Indian oligarch Tata is doing to repel the influences of WalMart and others.

Star Bazaar business is now be handled by Trent Retail Ltd, the proposed wholly owned subsidiary of the company. Trent had launched Star Bazaar hypermarket at Ahmedabad in 2004 and had recently entered Bangalore.

Trent took control of the entire stake in Landmark by buying the additional 24 per cent stake from its original promoters. It had acquired 76 per cent stake in Landmark in 2005 for Rs 103.6 crore. Currently Landmark operates 10 stores in the country.

Can American retail model even survive in India? Experts are divided on their opinion. Some believe it will eventually end is a disaster as Indian matures into a developed country. Remember, even in Germany WalMart failed miserably.

However, native Indian middle-class folks who could leave the country and get a green card in USA, will fuel the model in their pursuit of ‘American dream’ within India. It will work initially. Walmart was initially a total success in China. But as time goes by, the reality hits the road.

Eventually India will define its own retail model in the context of wired global marketplace. But it will distinctly different as in Japan and Germany.
