Media Release
Apr. 28, 2008

Indian Space Research Organization launched PSLV-C9, the 13th Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, this morning. The rocket carried a record ten satellites as payload, including eight nanosatellites, the Cartosat-2a remote sensing satellite, and the Indian Mini Satellite (IMS-1). The eight nanosatellites, developed by Europe, Canada and Japan, were built to develop nano-technologies for use in satellites as well as for the development of technologies for satellite applications.

Images taken by Cartosat-2a will have a resolution of one meter, and will be used in making maps which will provide valuable information in planning urban infrastructure, rural roads, ring roads, and settlements, as well as defense applications. The IMS-1, also a remote-sensing satellite, will use its cameras to monitor features on the earth such as its vegetation and water bodies.
