Sonia Gandhi shifts burden of inflation to State Governments – does India need a Central Government in New Delhi?
Balaji Reddy
Apr. 8, 2008

"I am aware that our Prime Minister is very sensitive to this issue and that he knows very well our party's thinking that while higher growth rate is essential, we must at the same time ensure that the prices of essential commodities especially remain affordable to all sections of society," says Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Party President in her Letter to Congresspersons in the current issue of Congress Sandesh, the party's mouthpiece.
She attributes the inflation to international developments and to the failure on part of the states to check hoarding.
When one fails to perform, he or she blames others for the failure, ridicules State Chief Ministers of Indian states.
"Strengthening of the PDS system is something that the state governments are responsible for and is something that they must make a priority. Similarly, it is the state governments that have the powers to control blackmarketing and hoarding just as the Central Government has the powers to control inflation. These powers have to be exercised so that the price rise does not affect the aam aadmi," Sonia Gandhi says.
