American backlash from India’s indirect but firm denial to sign nuke treaty – US cites India on illegally importing prohibited technology
Tarin Mugabe
Mar. 15, 2008

Bush Administration is sending a quiet but firm warning to India. US law enforcement officials and proliferation watchdogs have been relentless in pursuing a case in which a Singapore-based Indian businessman with operations in US and India was charged with illegally exporting prohibited technology to India.

According to sources close to the matter, American Administration claims New Delhi used private decoy businesses to smuggle sensitive American technology for use in its advanced weapon systems.

Parthasarathy Sudarshan, 47, admitted under a plea bargain in a Federal Court to a plan to conceal the real destination for electronic parts used in missile guidance systems, jet fighters, and night vision filters used in combat aircraft.

According to the charges, Sudarshan, along with an unnamed official of the Indian Embassy in Washington, conspired to violate US export laws by directing at least seven American firms he did business with to send deliveries of critical parts needed for missiles, space launch vehicles and fighter jets to Singapore, which did not require a license from the Commerce Department. The items were then re-routed to India.
