A hardy bacterial life form ‘cyanobacteria’ can grow in inhospitable lunar soil
Staff Reporter
Mar. 14, 2008

Life in moon can actually strive. The moon can become full of life. But life will take different form that what we know. For example, a hardy life form called cyanobacteria can grow in otherwise inhospitable lunar soil,. Future colonists on the Moon might be able to use the cyanobacteria to extract resources from the soil that could be used to make rocket fuel and fertilizer for crops.

Experiments done by NASA's Johnson Space Center demonstrated the concept. NASA experiments show some cyanobacteria are perfectly happy growing on lunar soil, if supplied with water, air and light. The cyanobacteria could be broken down to create fertilizer or methane for fuel, as well as concentrating metals for manufacturing. Scientists are now working on finding mechanisms needed to grow the cyanobacteria with the least possible effort in an inhospitable environment like the lunar soil.
