India must seek a fresh mandate from people before signing any nuke deal with US although Americans are eager to sign the same
Kartik Punaskar
Mar. 13, 2008

The consensus view in India is that Congress party should seek a fresh mandate from the people if the government led by it wants to ink the civil nuclear deal with the United States.

"We have already made it clear that we would not allow the government to ink the nuclear deal or any other deal which is US-centric and we have succeeded in doing this", CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told a party rally in Lucknow.

"If Congress wants the deal, it should go to the people and seek their mandate", Karat said.

US has made it clear that it was not averse to wrapping up the nuclear deal with a minority government in India. Our basic government position is that we can sign an agreement with a duly-constituted government, whatever its political status," US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher has said.

With the nuclear deal, US corporations like GE and Westinghouse will receive $100 Billion from India for nuclear reactors and parts. It is big money. Bush administration is eager to sign and help the big corporations of US make $100 billion.

India is a democracy. People must decide whether to sacrifice nuclear freedom in exchange of elimination of continued harassment and giving away India’s hard earned $100 billion to US corporations.
