Railway Minister Lalu Prasad claims by next year the Indian Railways would have a total surplus of about Rs 1,00,000 crore – but neglected infrastructure needs ten times that to avoid accidents in the future
Babu Ghanta
Mar. 11, 2008

Indian Railways has systematically shifted the required infrastructure repair and development to the future. The neglect is mainly in maintenance. The tracks are old. The signal processing is adequate. The overall infrastructure needs immediate overhaul.

It is estimated the overall infrastructure development and maintenance to bring it to the international standards will require close to Rs 10,00,000 crore. It is exactly ten times the over optimistic projections for the next year.

The UPA Government has done very little to maintain and improve the infrastructure. It is a shame that the Indian Railways minister comes out and shows off the projected surplus next year.

India’s main transpiration is based on Railways. Little improvement has been done to infrastructure in recent years. The trains have improved. The comfort levels in coaches have improved. But these are all superficial stuffs to compete with low cost airlines. The tracks have deteriorated. Indian Railways can face a series of accidents that can be catastrophic.
