Can Prime Minister Asif Zardari control Pakistani militancy and Musharraf?
Tarun Sikhdar
Mar. 10, 2008

It is now getting clear that the husband of Benazir Bhutto, Asif Zardari, will be the new PM of Pakistan. There may be an interim PM till gets into the Pakistani Parliament.
The bigger question is if he can control two equally bad entities of Pakistan - Pakistani militancy and Musharraf? How close will he get to its allies and US?
Zardari wants to make sure that Pakistan is prosperous again. That will be the biggest gift for his assassinated wife Benazir.
Pakistan has gone through tremendous turmoil and is now a failed state. It will be an uphill task to show the door to Mushrraf and his men over the next several years. Americans and the Europeans want stable Pakistan-Afghan border and a tight control over the nukes.
zardari’s biggest challenge is the Pakistani spy agency ISI who will try and keep Musharraf in power. The problem is that Pakistani ISI and military looks at a civilian elected regime as nothing more than a nuisance temporary factor.
Mushrraf has corrupted the Pakistani military to its core. Can Zardari purify the military? Zardari will have to act very shrewd. Othgerwise he will be eliminated again very soon. Pakistan will plunge into ruthless anarchy under Musharraf or someone else.
