Indian hockey a history of glory – like soccer, hockey is also a game of continuous stamina
Ratan Sen
Mar. 10, 2008

Indians are good is sports that do not require continuous stamina. In cricket they excel because there is enough room for the rest of the body, between balls, between overs and so on. It is after all a stretched out game over many days, hours and so on.

India’s decisive failure in international hockey is natural. The stamina game saw higher standards in soccer and hockey. But Indian sportsmen stayed at the same level.

India created a dubious history as they lost to England 2-0 to miss the bus for the quadrennial games for the first time in 80 years.

There is no use of calling the resignation of one individual or a group of individuals. The reasons are physiological. The hematocrit level (% volume of red blood cells in the total volume of blood) is less for Indian players. That causes lack of oxygen compared to players of other countries.

The remedy is to train the Indian team at an elevated altitude – somewhere in Himalayas. That will make them increase their stamina.
