India looking toward the India-US nuke deal to roll over to the new US Administration and start renegotiating the same
"The clock is ticking in terms of how much time is available to get all the different aspects of an agreement implemented," Gates said in New Delhi. India kept its cool and said that negotiations take time.
Three key US Senators -- John Kerry, Joseph Biden and Chuck Hagel-had said India needed to conclude the talks with IAEA and seek exemption from NSG by May. But India, according to sources from New Delhi is not eager to conclude the deal so fast. There are some flaws and India will seek to correct them before handing over $100 billion to GE and Westinghouse. The American corporations are eager to get hold of the $100 billion from India to maintain and boost their earnings as soon as possible. India is not eager to cater to the whims and desires of these US corporations.
Gates made the deadline clear as he had said that "with this being an election year, there is an open question about how long the Senate will be in session beyond this summer and September."
India made its intentions clear. "We are not looking at a deadline. We know the time-table, we know what to do," Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told media reporters in New Delhi. There are indications that Americans are pushing Indians to conclude the deal fast. India is smiling and saying not so fast. The American corporation eager to get hold of that $100 billion will have to earn it.
