The second leg of George Bush’s Iraq blunder starts – Turkey attacks Kurds in Northern Iraq
Prabhu Ramani
Feb. 22, 2008

In a significant escalation of its fight against PKK Kurdish separatists, Turkey has sent a huge contingent of ground troops into northern Iraq.

According to Turkey, the Turkish armed forces, which value Iraq’s territorial integrity and stability, will return as soon as planned goals are achieved.

The separatist PKK, which claims to want to create a Kurdish homeland, has been branded a terrorist organisation by the US, the European Union and Turkey. PKK is determined to push back the Turkish ground force out of Northern Iraq.

Close to 10,000 Turkish ground troops have eneterd the Northern Iraq to hunt down PKK militia. The fighting is untensive and casualty on both sides are heavy. The Turkish ground force has the cover of the Turkish Air Force. PKK militia has adopted ‘hit and run’ strategy to avoid Air Force attacks.

US President George W. Bush promised Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan in November to share information that would enable Ankara to identify PKK guerrillas in Iran and attack them. Perhaps Turkey misunderstood Iraq instaed Iran.

The quagmire can be severe. The whole region is now unstable. It is the result of US President George Bush’s Iraq invasion without thinking what can happen later. The second leg of George Bush’s Iraq blunder starts.
