A scare for Chinese and Russian Military - the American SM-3 missile hit right on target to knock out the fuel tank of the spy satellite on the first attempt

It was an interesting opportunity for America to demonstrate the anti-satellite as well missile shield capabilities. It is good news that the out of control satellite is no longer there to threaten lives on the earth.

The USS Lake Erie, armed with SM-3 missile designed to knock down incoming missiles launched the attack at 10:26 p.m. EST Wednesday (0326 GMT Thursday). It hit the satellite about three minutes later as the spacecraft traveled in polar orbit at more than 17,500 mph (27,500 kilometers per hour).

The missile not only hit the satellite, which was the size of a school bus, it hit it right on the target, the smaller, more worrisome fuel tank, whose contents posed potential health hazard to humans if it landed intact.

According to Pentagon, confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should be available within 24 hours.

”Because the satellite was orbiting at a relatively low altitude at the time it was hit by the missile, debris will begin to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere immediately. Nearly all of the debris will burn up on re-entry within 24-48 hours and the remaining debris should re-enter within 40 days”, Pentagon said.

It was $30 million mission for the Pentagon. The SM-3 missile and other components were modified in a hurry headed by the US Navy in January 2008. The missile alone cost nearly $10 million.
