Will America, Japan and rest of the world stand up against the dragon to protect Taiwan’s independence?
Balaji Reddy
Mar. 14, 2005

China has announced that it will not tolerate Taiwan’s independence moves. That really means military confrontation.

Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has started organizing a million people protest against the new Chinese law. The country is rising up to face the dragon to protect free market economy and Taiwan’s prosperity.

China on the other hand has reasons to protect its Taiwan position. If it loses Taiwan, may other provinces will like cessation from China. The hot bed of China is Tibet as well as Islamic provinces.

The million dollar question is will America and Japan rise up, provide a leadership to the United Nations and protect Taiwan’s independence.

International think tanks believe that America and Japan will oppose but not get into real economic or military confrontation with china over Taiwan. The primary reason is the fact that Japan and US have serious economic interest in China. American manufacturing base is in China. China is a major market for Japan and many other countries.

Even if Japan and US call for a united move in the UN, most of the nations will do nothing thinking about their economic interests.

That does not mean handling Taiwan can be easy for China. Taiwanese Government can be a source of major embarrassment for China. The Chinese will be busy defending their currency and Taiwan policies for the next five tears.
