Himalayan glaciers melting fast while excess rain and snow fall keeps water resource at the same levels

Media reports have cited that Melting glaciers in the Himalayas could lead to water shortages for hundreds of millions of people, the conservation group WWF has warned.

Scientists and geologists in India and China have found evidence that the water shortages predicted by this report is not something that is going to happen.

It is true that due to global warming, the glaciers are melting on the Chinese and Indian side of the Himalayas. But excess rainfall and snowfall keep the net water resource at the same levels.

The melting snow is causing floods in the plains. But higher temperature is also causing more rain and snowfall in the glacial resources. According to experts in India, what is really happening is the recycling process has become more vibrant. It did not change the net water levels.

The flood in coming years will be severe because the glaciers are melting and at the same time the rainfall has increased many folds. However, India and China have taken projects that will control the flood in the next fifty years. The water flow in the Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra, Mekong, Thanlwin, Yangtze and Yellow Rivers will increase many folds. However, there are no reason for these rivers ever to become dry causing drought in India, Nepal and China.
