Ethnic violence in Mumbai – start of a new phase in Indian politics – can India remain united? What is the root cause?
Shekhar Pundit
Feb. 4, 2008

’Unity in Diversity’ was the slogan of Pandit Nehru. That defined the Indian ethos for more than half a century. But today in the middle of economic prosperity, India faces daunting challenge to stay together.

The North East of India wants to secede. Kashmir is already in the middle of mess for a long time. People in non-hindi speaking states feel they are second class citizens.

What is the root cause of these ethnic clashes all on a sudden?

The reason lies in something that was cooking for more than fifty years – perhaps from the time of British. Before leaving India the shrewd British created two sets of nuisances for Indians. First they created Pakistan. Second they quietly created a Hindi speaking oligarch class that will dominate India for hundreds of years. These oligarchs come from Hindi-speaking states, Gujarat and Rajasthan included. These oligarchs are rich, powerful and keep most Indian politicians in their payroll.

Common people of India are fed up with these oligarchs. They are now even buying foreign corporations from the money they looted from common Indians.

Shiv Sena stupidly went after poor Hindi speaking vendors and taxi drives. They are not the problem makers. The Hindi oligarchs are spread through out India. They treat Assamese people as slaves in Assam – believe it or not. These Hindi oligarchs own most of the tea gardens. Look at the human rights abuses against the Assamese people in these tea gardens – far worse than the British.

One of my Bengali friend met a Gujarat oligarch who made billions sucking the blood of Bengalis in Kolkata. He mentioned something interesting to this Indian American from West Bengal. He said, every Bengali is a poet. They are ‘Babu’ only good for the positions of educated servants. Simply put, Bengalis are non-dynamic intellectuals food for writing poems only. He walked out of the meeting and questioned himself – why should West Bengal not secede from India?

Non-hindi Indians are fed up with the Hindi-oligarchs. That is the main reason for all ethnic violence in India.
