Rathore hits the bull's eye, beats his coach to claim gold
NEW DELHI: Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore outshone his coach Russel Mark while ace markswoman Anjali Bhagwat seemed determined to erase her disappointing show at the Athens Olympic Games as India reaped a rich harvest of three golds at the sixth Commonwealth Shooting Championship in Melbourne on Sunday.
With three gold and a silver on Sunday, India now have six gold, five silver and two bronze medals in the championship, a National Rifle Association of India release said here.
In the men's double trap team event, Rathore (93) and his teammate Ronjan Sondhi (80) faced stiff challenge from the Australian side which included mark (90) but the Indians totalled 173/200, which fetched them the gold while the Australians (169) settled for the silver while the bronze went to England (166).
It was a brilliant show by Rathore who upstaged his coach by three points. Mark has been coaching Rathore since before the Athens Olympics where the Indian won the silver medal in the double trap event.
Meanwhile, Anjali Bhagwat seems back on the track after her slipshod show at the Athens Games where she could not make it even to the final. In the women's sports rifle three position, Anjali (570) and Kuheli Ganugly (564) put up a brilliant show to total 1134/1200 that proved good enough to book the gold.
Malaysia (1125) won the silver while Australia (1122) bagged the bronze. The men's team in the rapid-fire pistol was also bang on target. Pemba Tamang (565) and Ram Kishan Yadav (558) looked very impressive and they tallied 1123/1200 to lay their hands on the gold medal.
Australia (1100) and Canada (1080) grabbed the silver and bronze respectively.
The women's Air pistol team, however, had to be satisfied with silver. Shweta Chaudhary (389) and Sarvesh Tomar's (374) aggregate of 763/800 came as second best after Australia (764). Malaysia won the bronze in this category.
