China may play political games with India-US nuke agreement

Jan. 16, 2008
China indirectly influenced the Indian communists to create a political uproar on the India-US nuclear deal. India has sought Chinese support for its case in Nuclear Suppliers'' Group (NSG) for India-specific waiver in implementation of the Indo-US civil nuclear cooperation deal but "no assurance" was forthcoming.
International think tanks believe China will eventually play political game and finally block the India-US nuclear deal in a way no one will understand what really happened. On the surface China is all for India but in reality the communist nation wants to the dominant nation in Asia.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told newsmen on board his Special Aircraft on way back from China that however he does not think Beijing would be an "obstacle" given the new relations between the two countries. Indian PM may be daydreaming while dealing with the Chinese leadership. China cannot show on the surface that it opposes nuclear deal between India and US. At heart it believes US is using India to check Chinese strategic moves.
The issue of Taiwan and Dalai Lama also looms on India. China will try gaining leverage on these issues and then quietly sit on the fence as far as NSG and IAEA are concerned.
