Fire in the wholesale market in Burrabazar of Kolkata caused by negligent enforcement of the fire code and decades of overcrowding – building can go down any moment
Balaji Reddy
Jan. 15, 2008

Indian Army and the Fire Fighters finally brought the blaze under control. But question remains what caused it? Was terrorists have a hand in it to make the economy weaker through higher wholesale prices?

Sources from Kolkata point to decades of negligent enforcement of the fire code and massive overcrowding in the area. The blaze in a multi-storeyed building in the country's biggest wholesale market in Burrabazar of Kolkata started all on a sudden.

To control the fire, which broke out on Friday night, they are spraying foam. The fire-fighters had to break the shutters of 970 shops in the 13-storeyed market to take control of the fire in individual shops. The army fire-figters attempted to climb to the ninth floor but were beaten back by the heat.

The building is structurally damaged very heavily. Cracks appeared in the front portion of the building which has slightly tilted to the left.
