Defy US: Communists prods India’s Prime Minister to go ahead with Iran pipeline
Left Front leaders have asked Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's government to defy Americans and go ahead on the proposed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project. Both the left stalwarts Harkishan Singh Surjeet and A. B. Bardhan, who returned from Pakistan after a nine-day tour, apprehended that the US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice may use her next week's visit to India and Pakistan to seek postponement of their economic ties with Iran.
The Communists in India pointed out that India and China need to look into the interest of the people in their respective countries and not accept American pressures.
The official position of India at this point is that India really wishes that US and Iran solve their problem mutually so that India can go ahead with the proposed Gas pipeline project with Iran. India needs energy – energy that will provide the need of more than billion people and for that the Iran-India Gas pipeline is the only possible way out.
The Pakistani position is unknown. But with US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice may use her next week's visit to India and Pakistan to seek, to seek postponement of their economic ties with Iran.
