Marxists start mending the wounds – Jyoti Basu says Tasilma welcome to West Bengal, Buddha travels to Nandigram

Dec. 25, 2007

CPI(M) has finally started making compromising moves. Jyoti Basu said controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen can return here if she chooses to, but the Centre will have to ensure her security. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev travels to Nandigram to announce some special packages for Nandigram residents.
''''If she wants to return to Kolkata or elsewhere in West Bengal, she is welcome. But the Centre will have to ensure her security,'''' Basu said from his Salt lake residence.
Nandigram is well secured by the West Bengal cops and the CPI(M) cadre. It is the first attempt by the Marxists to get involved in what common people need.
The Marxists always comment on communalism and extremism. But they have generated most controversy in India in these two areas in recent days. Can Buddha and Basu bring the party back to the door of the common people instead of getting bannered as party of special interest and vote getting religious facilitators?
Time can only say. At least they now understand that their postures were extreme in nature.
