PM Manmohan Singh broke Indian law by trying to woo non-Hindu voters in Gujarat?
Sudhir Chadda
Dec. 9, 2007

It was an interesting move by a desperate Prime Minister of India. The academician turned into politician under the banner of the Gandhi family may have broken the Indian law. The Election Commission of India is looking into a blatant violation of Indian law by Dr. Singh, his party under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and the Ministry of Minority Affairs.

It is a sign of a desperate captain of a sinking ship. Prime Minister's new 15-point programme for the Welfare of Minorities was advertised in newspapers just two days before the first phase of election in Gujarat. According to BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar, the advertisement is explicitly directed at minorities and specifies names of religions like Muslims, Christians and others.

The content of the advertisement and the timing of its release are aimed at using religion to woo a section of voters. It attempts to achieve polarization on the basis of religion and it is a surrogate political advertisement calculated to give political advantage to the Congress party.

It is a shame in Indian politics. It is shame for PM Manmohan Singh. It shame for the Congress party that once represented nationalism in India under former PM Indira Gandhi.
