Russia wants more money for its military hardware but India says ‘Niet’

Dec. 4, 2007
India has threatened to review its defense relations with Russia following Moscow hiking prices of various military deals and vacillating on handing over of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov. India is reluctant to go along with Russian whims on prices.
While Russian President Putin is busy securing his landslide victory, Russian military establishments indicated that they need more money from India.
Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said "We have paid more than 400 million dollars for the carrier and we own it now. I have told the government that the Navy's line is that we should not talk on renegotiating the price for the carrier.”
Russia has not only increased the annual escalation cost of weapon system from 2.55 percent to 5 percent, it is also demanding an additional $1.2 billion to deliver the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov.
India’s frustration in price escalation may be having the root somewhere else. Given the warming relation between India, United States, and Russia may not be feeling obliged to subsidize the military hardware prices for India. There is more to it. In a less than prudent manner, India and its rich industrialists and private business sectors have created a perception of ‘Rich India’ while India is still a poor nation especially in the countryside. That is creating a perception in Russia that if India is rich why Russia cannot charge market price for military hardware sold to India?
