Bangladesh death toll surpasses 5,000 - millions homeless – worst tragedy of the decade

Military helicopters, naval ships and thousands of troops joined international agencies and local officials in the rescue mission following Tropical Cyclone Sidr. Phillipines, India and other countries have come forward to help Bangladesh in this catastrophic calamity.

At least 2,206 people have died since the storm struck Bangladesh on Thursday, said Selina Shahid of the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management. Unofficial death count exceeds 5,000.

The biggest problem is that the road links and rail links are disrupted. The international non-Government organizations are not able to reach the helpless residents who are waiting for water, food and medical help.

Water is contaminated and deadly disease is spreading very fast. The situation is much worse than Katrina in New Orleans.
