‘Thrust should be to be self-reliant in Thorium fuel-based reactors and not foreign borrowed technologies under controversial agreements’: Kalam
Kiran Chaube
Oct. 24, 2007
Former president A P J Abdul Kalam says India must proceed towards self-reliance on nuclear technologies in Thorium fuel-based reactors. The agreements with other Governments on Uranium based reactors are not that important. India has already mastered the technology on Uranium based reactors. But India has the largest Thorium deposit and is poised to become the largest nuclear power in the world.
The nuclear agreement with America according to Kalam is secondary. If it comes with no strings attached, it is welcome. Otherwise it has no meaning for India.
India needs to work very fast on Thorium based technologies. Sources in London say Kalam hinted that the nuclear agreement with America is just to ‘legitimize’ India’s demand in getting India recognized as a nuclear power. The western world has kept the nuclear club private. They create all kind of problem for any country other than the club members that try and achieve nuclear independence through indigenous research and development.
Thorium based technology is cleaner. Even the technology can be exported once harnessed to France, US and other countries. India can export Thorium instead of importing Uranium.
