Sehwag's 173 run feast ends after lunch; Tendulkar and Ganguli in control - India 380 for three : win in sight
MOHALI: Opener Virender Sehwag lashed a breezy 173 before he got out off an Abdul Razzaq delivery on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan on Thursday.
India scored 334 for three in reply to Pakistan's first innings 312 all out, with Sachin Tendulkar unbeaten on 55, set for a world record 35th Test hundred. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly had just arrived on the crease.
Earlier, Sehwag tried to pull away a short ball outside the off stump off Razzaq and ended up hitting it in the air to the mid-on region as Yousuf Youhana held on to an easy catch.
Sehwag’s brilliant knock helped to put India in a commanding position. Sehwag, 95 not out overnight, completed his ninth Test hundred in the second over of the morning, steering paceman Rana Naved to backward point for a couple.
He made Pakistan pay heavily for dropping him on 15 and 82 on the rain-hit second day and reminded the visitors of the 309 he notched in the first Test in Multan last year after he was dropped before reaching his hundred.
Sehwag has batted over three hours, hitting 19 fours and two sixes while Tendulkar's 64-ball effort contained seven fours.
The 26-year-old Sehwag has now scored a century in six of the last seven series, starting with his 130 at Mohali in the drawn first Test against New Zealand in 2003.
Sehwag shared in an unbroken 102-run third wicket stand with Tendulkar, his third successive century partnership of the innings after he scored 103 runs with Rahul Dravid (50) for the second wicket and 113 runs with Gautam Gambhir (41).
Pakistan new ball bowlers Mohammad Sami and Rana Naved started well, pitching short to extract seam movement on a green pitch, but the bowling caved in once Sehwag shifted gears.
Sami took the only wicket to fall in the session, extended by 30 minutes, when he had Dravid caught by Asim Kamal at gully.
Pakistan were unlucky not to dismiss Tendulkar for eight when leg spinner Danish Kaneria's appeal for a bat-pad catch in his first over was turned down by umpire Rudi Koertzen.
Sehwag and Tendulkar then cut loose against Kaneria and paceman Abdul Razzaq while the centurion hit Rana Naved for three fours in one over.
Tendulkar was severe on Razzaq, playing some exquisite drives including two stunning shots straight down the ground. v
