The first challenge of Benazir Bhutto – brining militants and extremists into the mainstream Pakistan politics
Kiran Chaube
Oct. 18, 2007

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto ended eight years of self-exile and is back in Pakistan. Homecoming welcome was fabulous but real challenges lie in front of Bhutto.

Musharraf controls the Military. Benazir’s work is to control the common people. She was popular among Pakistanis. But today she is weaker because she is perceived as the agent of the western colonial powers and perhaps the poitician that finally legitimized Musharraf’s political ambitions.

The real challenge of Bhutto lies in bringing the militants and extremists to Pakistani mainstream. A tug of war is going on there. Taliban and Al-Queda wants Pakistan to join them in their terror act. But at the same time, Bhutto is injected in the equation to allow her to bring people of Pakistan together and defeat extremism right in the bud. She is first taking the approach bring the ‘prodigal sons’ of Pakistan back into the mainstream.

No one knows if the extremists will join Pakistani mainstream. But it the first challenge of Benazir.
