India and Bangladesh exchanged fires over India’s building a fence to restrict illegal immigrants entering into India.
Border forces of Bangladesh and India have exchanged heavy gunfire at the northwestern Singimari frontier, United News of Bangladesh reported March 9. A Bangladeshi peasant was injured. The exchange came after Bangladesh Rifles personnel opposed Indian efforts to fence off the border, which breached an agreement reached March 7 between the two sides to temporarily halt construction of the fence. A number of fights have broken out along the 2,485-mile border in response to India's attempts to build a fence.
India has categorically made it clear that it will not tolerate illegal immigration into India and covert militant bases in Bangladesh that try to export terrorism into India.
