Indian Institute of Science plans to help Microsoft on numerical simulation in Biomedical engineering but still India gets treated second tier research infrastructure
Neeta Singh
Oct. 13, 2007

This is an ideal example where India is seen as a second tier research infrastructure by the Western countries. Indian Institute of Science under research grant from Microsoft will help in numerical simulation of tuberculosis cells. It’s an impressive project. But what will Microsoft do with such research?

The main thrust of Microsoft research and development is far from India. They never even think about India as the real hub of reach. You cannot blame them. What if Indians all on a sudden starts competing with Microsoft on equal terms?

There is nothing wrong in taking grant money from Microsoft. This company is making enough in India. But India’s premiere science and technology institutes cannot forget that western companies see India as a place where second tier research can be well performed.

Microsoft Research Vice-President, External Research, Toney Hey was ecstatic about advanced computing technologies across scientific domains. But the question is again – what will Microsoft do with numerical simulation of tuberculosis cells?

The fact is that Microsoft is focused on using India as a selling ground. The research grant is just a marketing technique to show Indians how Microsoft plans to use India as a research center.
