A lesson learnt from Gotbaum case – do not travel by air unless you have to and never lose your patience because they can do anything they like

It is not just Mrs. Gotbaum who died in custody but many feel the same way. If anything goes wrong, you are looked upon as a terrorist. Many people dislike airports and air travel because the security personnel are rude and ready to do anything if they ‘decide’ you match a profile. Now new information has been released. Noah Gotbaum told a Phoenix airport operator that his wife was distraught after being bumped from a flight and she needs medical help. The authorities did not care. She was put under restraint, arrested and then she died in a holding cell.
You cannot blame the authorities too much. They are under tremendous pressure since 9/11 terror. However, they have over reacted in many cases all over the country with many innocent passengers especially with those that need metal or medical help.
As an Indian American tries to avoid airports and traveling by air, it is not a pleasant place. The people who check your id are barely qualified. They are often rude. Racial profiling happens no matter who says what.
If you have someone who is mentally ill, do not expose this person to these security folks in the airport. Most importantly, be prepared to be mishandled to a great extent. Keep your patience and just get out of the airport before getting into any confrontation.
