Bhutto and Musharraf close to a power sharing agreement but Bhutto may be making the same mistake her father made forty-five years back
Kiran Chaube
Oct. 4, 2007

The deal is simple. Musharraf and Bhutto have reached an agreement. Bhutto will be the new PM. Musharraf will retain the Presidency and ultimate control over the Military and ISI. Musharraf will wipe out all corruption charges against Bhutto.

While the deal is a pack of ‘give and take’ and a total submission of democratic institution to dictator, Bhutto may be making the same mistake her father made forty-five years back. The biggest question is can Musharraf and current Pakistani Military structure be trusted?

Benazir Bhutto’s father was an elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. The Military Junta of Pakistan dragged him to a brutal execution by hanging on some made up charges. That was the end of Pakistan’s democratic aspirations.

Pakistan Military and their intelligence wing ISI controls Pakistan since the independence of the country from the British. The law and order in Pakistan is based on the whims of the Pakistan Military. The democracy in Pakistan has suffered again and again in the hands of brutal dictators like Musharraf.

Even if Bhutto becomes the Prime Minister, what difference will it make? Pakistan needs a democratic Government – not just a show of symbol to keep the status quo intact and maintain Musharraf’s presidency.

Pakistani Military dictators have a typical life cycle. They are eventually removed by the Military itself. It will also happen here. It is just the question of time. Bhutto is just taking an enormous risk. We hope her fate does not resemble her father’s.
