Venezuelan President minces no words, says US plans to kill him
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is convinced that there is a US plan to assassinate him.
"The US endorses and favours a plan to assassinate me. If anything happens to me, the US president will be responsible for it," Chavez, who is on a four-day visit to India, told reporters in New Delhi on Saturday.
"We have enough evidence to denounce this publicly. We are praying this attack doesn''t happen," said the Venezuelan president, who accuses the US of trying to destroy Venezuela to push its interests in the region.
Sparing no punches, he said: "We have a problem with the US government. There is no doubt about that."
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has described Chavez as a "negative force" in Latin America. Diplomatic ties between Washington and Caracas have soured since Chavez came to power in 1999.
Accusing the US of plotting a coup against him three years ago, Chavez said: "They have been trying to sabotage our petroleum supply and food distribution network in Venezuela. The whole world should reject this aggression against Venezuela."
"The world is in serious trouble due to the US. It's very difficult to have relations with such a government," he added.
At the same time, Chavez expressed his country's desire to "maintain a normal relationship with the world".
