Aussie Govt. is working on a strategic plan to negotiate an FTA and to have increased security coop with India
Babu Ghanta
Aug. 20, 2007

There is nothing wrong in having Australia as a close ally as long as India maintains strategic military and economic strengths.

In a move to radically reshape its relations with India, the Australian government is working on a new strategic plan to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and to have increased security cooperation with the South Asian power.

A submission prepared by Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and endorsed by the cabinet has outlined the new approach "designed to elevate the India relationship to a core element in Australia's international orientation, along with the US, Japan, China, and Indonesia," The Australian newspaper said. As part of India specific initiatives, it also pledged to provide formal and active diplomatic support to New Delhi's bid for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council.

The conservative government of Prime Minister John Howard wants to enhance ties with New Delhi, which is becoming increasingly important to Australia economically and strategically, the newspaper said.
