Musharraf issues ultimatum but radical students and militants holed up in the Lal Masjid keep quiet
Preeti Singhani
Jul. 7, 2007

Can Musharraf really order the Army to kill the militants in Lalk Masjid like Indira Gandhi did in early eighties as Silh militants captured Golden Temple in India?

In a blunt warning to hundreds of radical students and militants holed up in the Lal Masjid, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday said that they must surrender failing which they would all be killed.

But Musharraf may be wrong about one thing. The people in Lal Majid are probably willing to sacrifice their lives. It is Musharraf that will blink because of possible precautions within Pakistan.

"No compromise would be made on peace and writ of the law will be ensured all over the country at all costs," Dawn news TV quoted him as saying during visit to provincial capital, Quetta.

It is time to think for Musharraf. May it is time to work with the democratic institutions in Pakistan to solve the problem.

In the early eighties when Indira Gandhi ordered Indian Army to liberate Golden Temple from Sikg extremists, Indian democracy was behind her. Every Indian supported her. Even then, she was assassinated by her Sikh body guards later.

Musharrf is a dictator. That is the biggest problem for Musharraf. He will say a lot but inside him his conscious will blink. It is time for Musharraf to take the help of democratic institutions of Pakistan and then take a unified action against the Taliban like extremists in Lal Masjid.
