Afghan President accuses NATO and US forces in killing innocent Afghans – war against Taliban cannot be won with just high-tech aerial bombardments and artillery
Balaji Reddy
Jun. 23, 2007

NATO and American forces face the real challenge in Afghanistan. The enemy hides behind the shield of the common people. When they attack and destroy the perceived enemy, they finally find they killed bunch of civilians. That makes civilians more sympathetic to the Talibans and other extremists.

It is interesting to compare Indian Army with that of the NATO and US Forces in Afghanistan. During the up rise in Punjab, in the early eighties, the Indian Army did not use the Air Force to level the Golden Temple. The extremists were hiding under the cover of the common people. They sent Army personnel to clean the extremists out. Many Indian soldiers got killed but the civilians were saved. American and NATO commanders should learn from that. You can never win a war if you cannot do the dirty job and risk the lives of your soldiers. When enemy hides behind the civilian shields, you need to walk into the mess and clean it up piece-by-piece and not kill all from the sky.

President Hamid Karzai accused NATO and US-led forces of ‘careless operations’ that killed more than 90 civilians, and said international troops should place a higher value on Afghan lives.

Operations using aerial bombardments and artillery against targets in residential areas “will have no benefit for Afghanistan”, Karzai said at a news conference.

"Several times in the last year, the Afghan government tried to prevent civilian casualties, but our innocent people are becoming victims of careless operations of NATO and international forces," an angry-looking Karzai said in a mixture of English and his native Pashto.
