Indian oligarch Tata slammed environmental watchdog Greenpeace for comments on Damra port
Media Release
Jun. 10, 2007

Shame on Indian oligarchs. They have no regard to environment and the well being of vommon people of India.

Tata Steel on Sunday slammed environmental watchdog Greenpeace for describing its proposed port project as "ecological blunder" saying it posed no threat to the turtles as has been testified by the National Environment Appellate Authority.

Greenpeace has termed the Tata's Dhamra Port as an "ecological blunder" in its recent study and has demanded that the steel giant should not have a port in the area as it was detrimental to the rich biodiversity found there.

"It is not true that the process of environment clearance for Dhamra Port did not examine the turtle issue. It would be interesting to know that the area where the port is proposed in a no nesting zone as found by the Dehradun-based WII," Tata Steel spokesman Prabhat Sharma told media reporters.

He said, the WII's report was further corroborated by the Orissa government and the Chief Wildlife Warden, following which the environmental clearance for the port was granted.

Greenpeace on Friday had said that a study carried out by North Orissa University team has found evidence of the presence of Olive Ridley turtles as well as other rare species in and around the Dhamra port site.
