Call center girls hide their profession to get married in India
Lara Larani
Feb. 24, 2005

In India people have started treating girls working in call centers serving American companies as some one inferior in society. Almost an invisible cast system has formed barring these girls from proper social status. People privately say these girls get verbally abused over the phone so heavily that they are close to “virtual call girls”. Recently, the girls working in call centers have started hiding their exact profession. When they start communicating for their marriage they never mention their profession.

The situation became more serious when an American DJ from Philadelphia Radio Station live on Air made a call to Indian Call Center serving American Businesses and verbally abused an Indian girl live on air. The Radio station had the audacity to post the whole transcript of the conversation of the verbal abuse of the girl over the Internet.

The episode has spread like a fire over the whole India and Indian girls working in these call centers are hiding their profession to lose their social status. “I work in the call center to earn a living, people from America and Europe are calling all the time and abusing over the phone – do they have sisters and mothers?” asked Sujata in Mumbai.

Aswin of Ahmedabad says very candidly, “when I was looking for my match for marriage I just had one objection – no call center girls please.”

It is a tragedy that American companies are saving money and increasing their annual earnings by shipping call center jobs to India. The American people cannot touch these companies – after losing their jobs they call these call center girls and abuse them to find relief in something. Government India is slowly awakening to these abuses. But lack of information keeps the Government officials in the dark.

India must understand, it must not be marked as job stealer of other countries. India is enough rich – the Foreign Direct Deposit is climbing steadily. What is needed is a perception that India can do others in the world cannot do!
