Like the Iraq war, American selection of World Bank presidency lacks transparency – Zoellick is the front runner
American President George Bush insists that the next World Bank president must be an American, maintaining previous tradition. But lack of transparency has caused massive troubles in Iraq war policy and in the World Bank. It has definitely lowered the image of the same America that freed the world against Hitler and stood steadfast against communist Soviet Union.
It is sad that President Bush cannot look beyond the norm and traditional American dominance in a changing world that asks for more parity and transparency.
America pleads for globalization. It tries to make business sense from outsourcing and open trade policy. But the same Administration is cold shouldering the transparency in the selection process of World Bank President.
Mr. Paul Wolfowitz episode in the World Bank should have been an eye opener for the Americans depicting what can happen if people are selected based on political popularity within the core of the Government instead of merit based selection process. The lack of transparency in policy decision is the root cause of all management failures. Soviet Union as a super power disappeared from the map of the earth because they lacked credibility and transparency in their decision-making.
It is time for America to recognize globalization in true sense. Outsourcing is a great way to get tough work dome for a cheap price. It is also great because international talent is recognized. But at the same token it is unjustified for the same Administration to refuse an open and transparent merit based process to select the next World Bank President.
Where is the real globalization? Is it just a tool when required for the special interests?
