The Trinamool Congress calls for strike on Mar 16
Media Release
Mar. 14, 2007

The Trinamool Congress, on Wednesday, called for a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal on March 16 in protest of alleged police atrocities in Nandigram.

Nandigram has been on the edge since January this year, when villagers attacked several state government officials.

On January 3, political analysts said outsiders may have had a hand in provoking Nandigram residents to attack state government officials.

Four days later, on January 7, the law and order situation came to a standstill after six were killed and eight injured in more violence over the acquisition of land for a special economic zone by Indonesia's Salim group.

In February, the West Bengal government ordered the transfer of East Midnapore Superintendent of Police A K Dutta. Six days after the transfer, villagers against the proposed SEZ clash with activists of the ruling CPI-M.

On March 10, activists of the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee launched an indefinite dharna in front of the Nandigram police station. The group claims to be spearheading the anti-farm land acquisition.
